3.7 Communication & Collaboration
Candidates utilize digital communication and collaboration tools to communicate locally and globally with students, parents, peers, and the larger community. (PSC 3.7/ISTE 3g)
Artifacts: Podcast
During the ITEC 7430: Internet Tools in the Classroom course I investigated a variety of internet tools and resources. During one of our modules we branched out and began experimenting with podcasts. Solomon defined podcasts as, “an audio or video netcast” (p.76). Podcasts are an audio story that can be created to share ideas and presentations both locally and globally. Our students can use podcasts to communicate stories, hold debates, or collaborate on newscasts. Teachers can use podcasts to communicate announcements with parents and students about upcoming events and publish presentations online for families to view when they have time. For this standard I created a podcast for my gifted parents to help introduce them to our next unit.
I created a podcast for our fourth and fifth grade gifted students on their final gifted project of the year. The unit that these students were working on was called MILE Market. In our district, the gifted program is called MILE (Marietta Independent Learning Experience). The MILE Market is an interdisciplinary unit that has the students becoming entrepreneurs. During this unit, we bring in a variety of local small business owners to mentor our students and to help guide them. Students acquire business licenses, develop business plans, create advertising for their businesses, work on their bookkeeping, create products for their consumers, and practice their sales techniques. Before I could create my podcast I had to compile all of the information that our students were going to experience in this unit. I started off by using Audacity to tape my podcast and then I uploaded it to SoundCloud. SoundCloud is a free site where you can record and upload sounds to share them privately or publicly. You can also use this site to listen to new music or other podcasts.
Podcasts are becoming the new oral reports in our classrooms. Considering that so many of our classrooms have Audacity and iPads makes it really easy for our students to use this tool to present and learn from one another. Our students can use podcasts for reading radio, which can increase comprehension and fluency. It can also be used to celebrate the different cultures in our classrooms. For example, our students can record important cultural months and then share their audio newscasts on your class webpage for everyone to see. After listening back over my podcasts, I should have written out my script to cut down on the ums and I would have also added some music to the podcast to make it interesting.
This podcast was shared with our fourth and fifth grade gifted parents through email and on our class webpage. I also shared this podcast with the other gifted liaisons in our system. The impact can be assessed by examining the quality of the final student products, student reflections on their final gifted unit, and feedback from our gifted parents on their perception of the inclusion of the podcast.
