Artifact: Copyright & Fair Use
During the ITEC 7445: Multimedia & Web Design course I created a PowerPoint presentation on the topic of Fair Use and Copyright: What does it mean for broadcasts. The presentation includes notes about copyright and fair use, understanding how this impacts our usage of materials in our classroom, and a brief quiz to test your knowledge.
This presentation was designed for both my teachers and my students to clearly define the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses for copyright and fair use in our classrooms. Copyright is considered protection for authors who create fixed works. These works can include: books, recordings, movies, and even computer programs. It is also important to remember that this protection covers both published and unpublished works. Fair use exempts educators, reporters, and critics from certain copyright restrictions. This allows them to use parts of the copyrighted material for teaching, news reporting, and for research. Fair use can facilitate in our classroom instruction by providing teachers with access to many of these materials. For example, educators can use broadcasts or videotapes to increase student engagement and instruction by viewing these materials. Educators can also model for their students how to get permission to view these materials. This step models an authentic real world experience where our students are given an opportunity see how copyright and fair use is really used in our schools.
I enjoyed creating this artifact, mainly because I learned a great deal about copyrights and fair use guidelines. For example, I learned that teachers can broadcast shows from local channels and cable shows, but only for a limited time. Looking back on this assignment I feel that I would change my focus from broadcasting to digital photos. Broadcasting is an important topic, but I believe that understanding the ethical use of digital photos would be more useful. So many of our students create projects and they eagerly want to add photos to their projects.
After I completed my PowerPoint I shared this information with our school librarian. I felt that she may want to share this presentation with our staff. I was also able to use many of the things that I learned in my classes. It has really come in handy while helping my students create online projects. The impact can be assessed through feedback from my students and their understanding of copyrights and fair use.
